Flash stock sites review – Flash Components (buying)

flash components

Flash Components is a dedicated Flash file marketplace established in 2001. Anyone can apply to be an author and each file is reviewed before upload.

Design

The web 2.0 bandwagon has rolled on past and left the Flash components site in its wake. There isn’t anything terribly wrong with it, its just so utterly forgettable. The logo epitomizes the design approach with one (or five) too many Photoshop filters applied.

Once we got past the predictability of it all, the layout starts to make a lot of sense. Everything is where you would expect it to be and the homepage is fantastic for getting a quick overview of the latest and greatest files.

★★★☆☆

Usability

At first glance all seems well here, the search bar remains highly visible throughout and you rarely get lost thanks to the breadcrumb navigation. The category and search systems are logical and work well with useful filters allowing for further refinement.

There are some confusing navigation elements, especially on the individual file pages. This however, pales in to comparison next to the colossal mistake made with the buying process. The “buy now” button does not in fact buy now; you are expected to hunt around for the “add to basket” button at the bottom of the page. This is the sort of error that loses sales and frustrates buyers. Once you get past this stupidity its nice to find that you can buy the file without first depositing money or even signing up.

★★★★☆

Library & pricing

The Flash components library is by no means huge considering its apparently been around for 8 years! (we are not convinced by this claim). That said there is a good mixture of files and its debatable how many menus and xml galleries you will need to choose from anyway. There are rss feeds and email notifications so its easy to keep track of new files.

Pricing seems a bit inconsistent, which is not surprising as the author`s can suggest the prices themselves. We are pretty confused about the license agreements, there are 4 or 5 to choose from, none of which are very clearly explained. The most commonly used Regular license looks like outstanding value allowing for unlimited, unrestricted use (apart from resale).

There seems to be little control over undercutting as its now common to see an entire author`s portfolio at a massively knocked down price. While this is good for buyers in the short term, its debatable how sustainable this. Flash components are in danger of losing authors who do not want to compete in a race to the bottom of the bargain bin.

★★★★☆

File quality & support

File quality is the lifeblood of any stock site, without good files a marketplace will soon die. Flash components does not have the excellent exclusive authors that other sites have, but there are still some great authors with great files. There is a ratings system and a popular files section so it easy to find the real quality. The review process seems to stop the worst getting through, but we would still like a higher level of quality control as there are some very average files here.

Support is a mixed bag, you can leave the author comments and send private messages, but there is no guarantee of getting a helpful response. Considering the low prices this should be no surprise. One big plus is there are active forum topics for the most popular files, so you can benefit from a bit of community spirit.

Support staff were very good in our experience, replying within 3 hours with a helpful response.

★★★★☆

Overall rating

Flash components has a lot of things going for it, if you can get past the uninspired interface you will find a good selection of reasonably priced and fairly well supported files. Quality is average, but find files with the Regular licence and you will get an amazing deal. We have some serious concerns over the buying process, but loved the simple one off, registration free, payment option.

Great article ;) I’m really looking forward to read next marketplace reviews ;) Are you going to write the review from the authors point of view? Chears m8

Yes, we do plan to write detailed reviews for authors as well.

It’s very good to comment a website. But, it seems that you’re an exclusive author in FlashDen.net (Chuckanucka). So, how can it be healthy?

You raise a valid concern, but I think I am in a good position to review these sites as I have brought and/or sold on all them. This article was also co-written with another Flash Blog author who has no ties to any site.

Right now I do sell files on Flashden, but one of the reasons I wanted to write these reviews was to explore what else was out there. If there is a better deal, I will move. Wait until the Flashden review is published before making any conclusions.

I also contacted flashcomponents.net and they felt the review was fair and well balanced. If you have any comments about the site yourself, let me know.

Ok. I’ll wait for FD review. There’re some reasons to wait. You can read it in my Twitter page.

you are dead on with this review! some thoughts I had.

1) quality is a mixed bag here. there are some excellent files by well-know authors and there are some crap files that should never have been allowed in my opinion.

2) the license is huge! most stock Flash sites provide some variation of this unlimited use approach but arguably the top site has tried to buck this trend with single-use licensing for the same price! Flash components have always been sold with unlimited use. imagine having to pay Adobe over and over each time you used one of the standard components included with Flash!

3) your overall rating is not so useful since different elements will matter differently to various users. I for one really could care less about their bugly website. but the total cost of license is very important,

4) and I’m not sure support should be rated since that is not even included is it?

5) as someone else already pointed out, because you are an exclusive author at another Flash stock site your reviews could be viewed as suspect! I’d suggest a disclaimer at the top of each review so readers can evaluate your possible bias for themselves.

Thanks for doing this! I look forward to the next review. Sorry for the run-on formatting. I tried CR and it did not work. Then I tried HTML breaks and it did not work. I’m sure there is a way…I just don’t know what it is!

Jim,

The license is an important issue. The biggest problem I have with FC is there are quite a few licenses with ambiguous names (I am looking at you “special” license) and they change from file to file. You really have to keep an eye on what you are buying. I disagree with your Adobe analogy, but that`s a whole other discussion.

Support was rated as it does vary quite a bit between all of the stock sites. While not a requirement of FC authors, there has been a lot of thought put into a support infrastructure. Its also a very important consideration to some buyers.

There is actually a declaimer at the bottom of this post. I think it would be strange if I had not used any of these sites.

Many thanks for taking the time to comment. Html breaks and paragraphs should work fine.

you are right about their licenses! I have had several email exchanges with them (which I keep for records) to be sure I have the rights I think I have. that is one thing that burns me about FD; I feel they changed the rules after the game started! :)

the Adobe analogy holds for quite a few other instances such as Visual Studio components and all 3rd-party Flash component vendors. they all allow unlimited use by the licensed developer. other than FD there is no other Flash stock model in use for a single-use license scheme that I am aware of. I know they want to use more of a photo stock type license but I don’t see that working long-term. too many options available.

I read the disclaimer. it just seems that because you are an exclusive author at FD and apparently do the majority of your business there that fact might be nice to mention. but it has been mentioned enough by now! :D

thanks again for your thoughtful reviews on this topic. I await the next with bait breath!

regarding the HTML breaks, after I submit my posts, every sentence and paragraph is run together. I noticed that overnight the formatting is now working on my previous post. but on this one, currently they all run together. (using FF3)

After some craziness with the comments, It should be ok now. You should be able to just hit return to start a new paragraph.

I have also updated the original review after a bit more thought. The overall rating has gone up to 4 out of 5.

Jim,

I don`t really want to get into this here but, it is worth noting that the next site I`m reviewing has a standard single use license and Flash Components also has one (albeit not widely used).

Single use licenses are not unique to Flashden they can be found on nearly every photography stock site.

No one is actively enforcing these licenses so it really comes down to your own morality how seriously you choose to take them.

I think I already acknowledged that stock photo sites use the single-use license model. But as far as I know the serious Flash stock sites do not except for FD. Single use is not common at FlashComponents (as you mentioned) and iStock, as you point out in your review, is not a serious Flash stock site. I don’t mean to be argumentative but it is valid to point out that FD is trying to buck the trend and establish a more profitable model because as the biggest Flash stock site (for now at least) they can try this.

and to your point about enforcement, you are correct. my bet is that only a very small percentage of buyers are going to honor these license terms. most people (who would never consider stealing a loaf of bread) won’t even think twice about reusing that scrollbar without sending another payment to FD! given that practicality, I think a more forward-thinking model would be to allow or even encourage multiple use and then look toward increasing prices as quality goes up.

just my thoughts. enjoying the conversation and the reviews.

(hey, the formatting works perfectly now)

Assessing the money flow is another important element within the company strategy format, so as to sustain a regular cash flow to meet the essential capital needs. Probability of monetary crisis and also the ways of crisis management must be pointed out within the structure. The company technique must consist of the marketing plans and strategy leading to the expansion from the organization.
